Featured Event:  2009 Kirkwood Greentree Festival

Wine Garden Friday, September 18, 5-10 pm

Saturday, September 19, 8:30am-7pm - Kirkwood Park

Sunday, September 20, 10-5 pm - Kirkwood Park

The 49th annual Greentree Festival will come to Kirkwood Park Friday through Sunday, Sept. 18 through 20.  The annual parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, and is a festival highlight. This year's theme is "Making Music in Kirkwood."

This years event is still in the planning stages so check back for more details later this summer.

The festival was created in 1961 in response to an epidemic of Dutch elm disease that was sticking many of the city's beautiful, century-old trees. Residents were encouraged to plant trees to replace those being lost, and trees were sold for $1 each at the festival. Today many of those trees are mature and grace the lawns and streets of Kirkwood. The festival's link with trees and its original purpose continues to this day as a Boy Scout troop carries on the tradition of selling or giving away trees each year at the festival.

The Greentree Festival also gives residents and visitors a time to gather together and celebrate the season. In 2001, the festival went from a two-weekend event to a three-day event.  Some of this year's events include:

The annual Greentree Festival is attended by more than 40,000 people who gather for the food, arts and crafts, a children's dog show, a parade and craftspeople demonstrating their skills each September in Kirkwood Park.
Gardener's Village - Exhibits and demonstrations featuring Master Gardeners.

Featured Event:  2009 Turkey Day Game!

The 102nd Battle for the FRISCO Bell
Thanksgiving Day 2009

DETAILS TO COME

HISTORY:  As two leather-helmeted teams faced off in 1907 at the first annual Turkey Day game, they had no idea that their knockdown, drag-out game would result in modern day football-not to mention the longest running classic west of the Mississippi. Kirkwood defeated Webster Groves 5-0. The rules of the game did not develop until 1910.   Read Entire Article

Following tradition, the winning team will receive the Frisco Bell, a 400-pound bell from a retired train.  The famed bell was donated by the Frisco Railroad Company in 1951 and currently belongs to the Webster Groves Statesmen.

The game has brought both towns celebrity status over the years, with clips on ESPN as well as features in the New York Times and Sports Illustrated.  Thousands of alumni, family and community members will gather for their pre-feast fill of football, tailgating and community spirit.
